GAP WALK JOURNALS - VII
Monday - September 29, 2008 Day 208 0.0 miles
Total Pennsylvania miles - 41.2 Walking Days - 95
Washington D.C. miles - 4.6 Cumulative miles 1700.1
No walking miles again today, but we did accomplish a lot.
Bonny had several phone calls to make about her stolen wallet
and the contents. We planned to go to the New Jersey DMV
after her calls to take care of her missing driver’s license. She
got her credit card canceled and found that nothing had been
charged on it. That made her wonder if the wallet was still in the
dumpster.
She decided to go to the office and talk it over with them. So
after talking with the manager and the owner we gathered at the
dumpster with latex gloves on and began the search. One bag
into the search Bonny was ecstatic to see her wallet, and going
through the contents she found that everything but the money (a
minimal amount) was there. I didn’t even get my gloves dirty!
I did grab some paper towels from the van and cleaned the
wallet off, or at least wiped off the worst part. Her cell phone
still has not been found, but I think we can manage without it by
just sticking close when I’m walking.
After thanking the motel owner for his help, Bonny and I headed
for Wal-Mart to get her a new wallet. The old one smelled pretty
bad, and it was really smelling up Lady Mag as well. Bonny
used Wet Ones to clean off the contents of her wallet, then
threw away the old wallet.
We had several things to get in Wal-Mart, so we headed off
separately to each get the needed items. Bonny’s main one was a
new wallet and a car deodorizer. Late last week I had bought
peach scented hang up deodorizers for our motel room, and we
hung those over the vents of our air conditioner. These did
wonders for the odor coming from the air conditioning - in fact
we smell peaches as we come into the building where our room
is.
So that is what Bonny got. Now our van smells like
peaches - a very nice fragrance, and certainly better than the
smell of garbage.
Hmmmmm, that brings a Scripture to mind from II Corinthians
4: 14 - 16. “But thanks be to God, who alone leads us in victory
through Christ. God uses us to spread His knowledge
everywhere like a sweet-smelling perfume. Our offering to God
is this: We are the sweet smell of Christ among those who are
being saved and among those who are being lost. To those who
are lost, we are the smell of death that brings death,” (the
garbage smell) “but to those who are being saved, we are the
smell of life that brings life.” (Like the peach fragrance)
This morning at breakfast Bonny and I had the opportunity to be
that sweet-smelling fragrance to a lady as she sat with us and we
shared about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
No decision was made on her part, but we will see her again
while we are here. We encouraged her to read certain passages
from the Bible she told us she had. Please pray for this lady.
From Wal-Mart Bonny and I went to McDonald’s for lunch. We
had already decided it was too late to walk today, but felt we
needed to do some pre-driving so Bonny could see the route.
This is especially necessary if she has to do without a cell
phone. The route is pretty easy for the next 25 miles at least, and
we can drive any sections again that she is concerned about just
before I walk it. It was good to pre-drive it, and get through the
city of Wilmington, DE (I should walk through there in a couple
of days if all goes well).
On the way back to our room we found a Starbucks!
Yes, that
made me very happy. Then we went back to our grocery store to
buy some things for dinner tonight. I had my dinner soon after I
got back to the room while Bonny went to the lobby to check
her e-mail and take care of some business.
Now I’m listening to the news as I write this, and I’m hearing
about the failed “bailout” vote today in Congress. Of course,
the Republicans and the Democrats are blaming each other for
all that’s happening. In the meantime we’ll be praying here, and
I hope each of you will be praying. God is still alive, and ready
to hear us call out to Him.
