GAP WALK JOURNALS - V
Friday - August 1, 2008 Day 149 16.3 miles
Total Maine miles - 190.5 Walking Days - 71
Washington D.C. miles - 4.6 Cumulative miles 1195.9
It was pouring down rain when we got up this morning, but
knowing we had a distance to drive to our route start we went
ahead and got ready for the day. We have found from experience
that less than 20 miles away can be a totally different type of
weather.
I decided to try for a short day of walking today. I felt a little
weak, but pretty sure I would be ok as long as I took it easy.
Russ waited while Connee and I walked a couple of miles or so,
then drove by and checked on us. Missing walking time like this
is really hard on both of us. Then Russ drove on ahead and
waited as usual.
When I got to the car I got in and rested for awhile, then finally
we went for a second segment. We both wanted to get some
mileage in, but knew we had to be careful. Our route was on a
very quiet road with practically no traffic. Most of the time we
walked right in the middle of the road where it was easier.
When we got to the end of the second segment we told Russ we
wanted to break for lunch, then see how we were feeling. Lunch
was great in the town of Milo at a cute little café. I had a
delicious tomato soup with rice and vegetables in it, and a small
salad.
Back to our route to walk one more segment. It was very
wearing on both Connee and me - she had the start of a
headache, and my tummy was doing flip-flops. By the time we
finished this beautiful segment we were ready to quit. We did
manage to take a few pictures as we walked this part.
Finally we reached the van where Russ was waiting at the
Pleasant Street Bridge. We got in and headed back to our motel,
with a pit-stop at McDonald’s in Cambridge (I think that was
the town). We also made a stop at the grocery store before
going to our room.
Then time for showers. I stayed behind while Russ and Connee
went for dinner with orders to bring me back some mashed
potatoes. I’m calling it quits early again tonight so I can get a bit
more rest. Oh, by the way, the weather did let up a bit for us.
We had a little rain when we first started, and more a little later,
but mostly we just walked in cloudy weather.
