GAP WALK JOURNALS - V
Friday - July 25, 2008 Day 142 28.0 miles
Total Maine miles - 108.1 Walking Days - 68
Washington D.C. miles - 4.6 Cumulative miles 1113.5
Well, maybe it’s getting to be “Old hat,” but I did it again -
broke my record, as you can see above. Connee walked an
incredible 18.6 miles.
On the way to start walking Russ all of a sudden said, “moose,
moose, moose, moose.” We looked up and sure enough there
was a young moose crossing the road. He looked like he was
looking for his mother. It was pretty exciting.
Connee and I began walking together in the rain this morning. It
really looked like it was going to be raining a lot today, but it
stopped soon after we started walking. It sprinkled a little bit
after that off and on, but by noon it had stopped completely. We
had hills to climb, and sights to see. It was really quite beautiful.
During our third segment a car pulled up and the couple inside
asked if that was our van back there. We told them it was. At
first they thought we were broken down, then realized we were
walking for a purpose. They were quite excited about it when
we told them what we were doing. Traffic was coming up
behind them and we had to let them go without getting a picture.
A few minutes later another car pulled up with two women in
the back seat, and two men in front. They were all excited, and
took our pictures. They had actually talked with Russ, so were
looking for us. The two women decided to get out and walk with
us a bit at our encouragement. They were Yun and Haran - both
Korean women - what a delight to have them walk with us a
short way. Of course we all had to get pictures of each other.
Their husbands picked them up a few moments later. Connee
and I were soon at the car where Russ was waiting. After filling
my water I headed out, alone this time. Connee and Russ
headed off to Wal-Mart to do some shopping.
As I walked I prayed and thought. Connee and I start each day of
walking with praying back and forth.
I was able to get a longer time in while Connee and Russ were at
Wal-Mart. When they got back we stopped for lunch. We had
picked up sandwiches to go this morning at Brenda’s
Restaurant. They were very good.
After lunch I continued up the highway. It didn’t rain anymore,
and the temperatures were quite lovely. In segment 6 we had
some really good hills. Connee was with me again.
Just before we finished, a man called to us from across the
street. We went over to talk with Tom and find out more about
him, and tell him what we were doing. He told us he was a
hermet from Maine. He’s a pretty outgoing hermet.
When we reached Russ we got in the car and drove toward
Patten. We stopped at the market to get a few things, then we
continued on watching for a view of Mount Katahdin which is
the highest point in Maine at 5,267 feet high. I bought a stuffed
moose at the market with a Mount Katahdin sweatshirt, so we
got a picture of him with the mountain behind him, but made it
look like he was hopping on the mountain.
On to Brenda’s Restaurant for our dinner. Very good, as usual.
Then to our motel to take care of chores and get to bed.
