Total North Carolina miles - 63.3 Walking Days - 36
Accumulative miles -535.3
Moving day - this time to the home of Bob and Becky in
Lucama, NC. Moving day is a little more relaxed for me. I
don’t push myself to get up quite as early. Then I sit with my
chai and enjoy my Bible and prayer time. On walking days
we’re trying to start earlier, so I do my Bible time after we get
back to our room, and part of my prayer time on the road,
finishing it later also.
Saying good-bye to the Howard Johnson that had been our home
for the last week we headed for Wal-Mart to pick up a few items
we needed. Our shopping out of the way we pulled onto I-95
and headed north. We had a prayer time as we drove, then had a
CD on of the Sons of the San Joaquin.
Lunch was in the town of Benson at the Main Street Café. It was
a really good lunch, and some of the meals they were serving to
others looked so delicious. I was happy with my sandwich, and
wasn’t stuffed afterwards. They had coconut cream pie on the
menu, so we asked for some, but were told they had just sold the
last of it - and we thought we were early since it wasn’t even
noon when we got there. Our next choice was Boston Creme
Pie, but turned out that wasn’t quite ready yet. They did keep
offering us apple pie, but that wasn’t what I wanted. Oh well, I
guess I just wasn’t supposed to have dessert - and probably just
as well.
On we went heading to Lucama. I turned off at the rest stop to
call them so they’d have an idea of when we’d get there. I
looked at the GPS, and it said 88 miles, so that’s what I told
them. When I talked to Becky she told me they had a big german
shepherd, and wanted to know if we were ok with that. Yes, we
were delighted actually. Bob told her to tell me they also had a
rooster for me. I laughed and said that he must have read
yesterday’s journal entry on the website. She assured me he
probably had cause she sure didn’t know what that was all
about.
A few minutes later realized I must have looked at the wrong
mileage because we couldn’t possibly still be 88 miles away
from their place. In fact we were only about 5 miles away. I
called them back so they wouldn’t be too surprised when we
came in so quickly.
I think it was only about 1:30 or so when we arrived. Gus, the
German shepherd, greeted us with great excitement. He is a fun
dog, and likes to carry large pieces of wood around - the pieces
of wood meant for the fireplace.
After meeting Bob and Becky we were shown our rooms. Then
we all sat down to get acquainted. Bob and Dave have a lot in
common with both of them being into genealogy. Too bad
Dave’s not here. Both Bob and Dave have a great sense of
humor as well. Oh, I asked Bob where the rooster was, and he
informed me they had locked it up so I wouldn’t be bothered by
it. (If you don’t know the rooster story, it’s in last night’s journal
entry.)
Bob kept getting phone calls, and Becky commented that they
never get so many calls. It seems Bob was talking with a
reporter for the Wilson Daily Times, and trying to work out an
interview for me. Hillary, the reporter, decided to do the
interview over the phone and then get a picture when I walked
through the area.
After doing the interview I decided to make an exception to my
usual and walk through Wilson tomorrow instead of later so
they can get the story in now. So tomorrow I’ll walk a segment
in this area, then on Friday we’ll go back to Garland where we
left off Tuesday. When we get to the segment we do tomorrow
we’ll go around it to start the next segment.
After all this we brought our luggage in, then got ready to go to
San Jose to eat - yes, I did say San Jose. It is a Mexican
Restaurant, and the food was really delicious. I hadn’t had
Mexican since Florida I don’t think.
Following dinner we drove around Wilson to see the town a bit.
Wilson is the main town in the area. Lucama, well Lucama’s
main street was pointed out to us, but if you don’t look quickly
you’ll miss it. We went to the Wilson Library, and the Wilson
Rose Garden. At the Rose Garden we got out and walked
around and took lots of pictures. What a beautiful spot.
Finally it was time to go back to the house and get ready for bed
and for tomorrow. It’s been an interesting day - I think we’re
gonna enjoy being here with these delightful folks. But now it’s
time to sleep.
