I was a little more tired today, so wasn’t sure just how far I
would get. Still I set a goal for myself of a particular junction at
Fairmont, NC.
Soon after I started I came to Fork, SC. As I turned at the
junction a man pulled up across the street and asked what I was
doing. I walked across and talked with him for quite awhile. He
was delightful to talk with. As he left he told me he wouldn’t
offer me a ride because I need to walk every step. He is one of a
few who really catch on to that concept. James is a Christian,
and we had some good fellowship as we talked.
Lake View was the next town I came to. I took some pictures of
their lake. It is really beautiful, unlike most lakes I’m used to.
The trees grow all through it just as they do in almost every
creek and swamp around here. It’s so fascinating.
Daryl met me soon after that at another similar lake. Then she
walked with me on to the North Carolina border. We both took
pictures, and then the batteries died in both our cameras. I
changed my batteries, but the recharged ones had died also. We
walked on for a bit, then Daryl walked back to the car. She then
went to get gas in the van, and batteries for my camera. Hers is a
different kind of battery that had to wait for another store.
While Daryl was walking with me a lady stopped to see if we
needed a ride someplace. We didn’t get to talk with her because
of traffic, except to assure her we were walking on purpose.
She’s probably wondering why would anyone walk on purpose
where we were.
After Daryl left I continued on through a very open area - few
trees, and lots of sun. A man stopped to see if I needed a ride,
and I told him what I was doing, and he kept asking where I said
I was walking to. He just couldn’t believe it. Traffic kept him
moving on.
Soon Daryl came again with the batteries, and some sweet tea
for me. She’s been doing that for me the last few days. I take a
few sips, and then she meets me down the road someplace so I
can sip some more. I really appreciate that sweet tea - so
refreshing. I shall miss it when we leave the South.
By now I had gone almost 15 miles, and I was ready for a break.
She told me about Bud’s Corner, and we drove back there to
enjoy some lunch. She had gotten the batteries and tea there, and
had talked to Bashears (not sure of the spelling of that name),
telling him about the walk. When we walked in Bashears
greeted us, and we talked a bit, then he said to go on in and eat
anything we wanted and he would take care of the bill. That was
so nice. We both had hamburgers and onion rings - very good.
Back to where I had stopped. With my water pak filled, and
feeling rested I set out to do another 4 miles to reach the goal I
had set for myself in the morning.
Backing up to this morning on the drive out to start, I had
several text messages from Sam, my granddaughter. Chase, hers
and Chips 7-month old son, had been taken to Children’s
Hospital last night by ambulance. He had been sick for the first
time since birth, and had developed the croup. This is not
generally something to worry about a lot, but in Chases’ case he
was having a very hard time breathing. They had first taken him
to Urgent Care, and the doctor there had called the ambulance.
For those of you who don’t know the story of Chase’ birth, he
was born 12 weeks premature. He has not been allowed to go
where he might catch something because of his premie status.
At Children’s Hospital he was put on a mix of oxygen and
helium, and put into ICU where he will stay until he can be
taken off of the helium. They are checking to see if he has scar
issue in his trachea that caused the inflamation that brought on
the difficulty in breathing. Scar tissue could have been caused
by all the tubes he had to have when he was born. We prayed for
Chase and his parents then, and again throughout the day.
Now, as I neared the end of the day’s walk my phone rang. It
was Sam. She shared some of the things I shared above. For
those of you who haven’t heard, she is expecting again, and has
had to undergo some special procedures to keep her from having
another premie. She was on her way to see one of her doctors,
and asked me to pray with her about all that’s happening. What
a privilege to pray with her and for her. Soon after I prayed, my
phone died. That was unusual, but it must have been doing a lot
of searching today for service. That does use up the battery
more.
When I got to the end I got into the car and we headed off to
Wal-Mart where we had to get several things. Then to our room
to get ready for the night - shower, journal, eat, etc. etc.
And now I am ready to go to bed and get some shut-eye and rest
my legs for the night.
